V1. Bach, M, Strange Altars, 1st edition, Bobbs- Merrill 1952, 8vo, green papered boards with gilt lettering and cross symbol to spine and front board, 254pp, with a frontispiece. A first-hand account of the author’s experiences of Voodoo in Haiti. Ex lib, file number to spine, faint trace of book plate removal to front paste-down, blind impressed stamp to title page, ink stamps to top and bottom edges of text block. Joints and edges of boards very rubbed, spine worn and chipped at ends, half a dozen pages slightly spotted, text otherwise clean and tight. A Good cheap reading copy £3.50

V01. Bertiaux, M, The Voudon Gnostic Workbook, 1988, ‘expanded edition’ Weiser 4to pbk. 2007, 18 + 619pp, errata tipped in. The author’s own hybrid magickal system based on the teachings of La Couleuvre Noir, and chiefly being a fusion of Haitian vodou, American hoodoo, and the Japanese Kami sprits. Due to an “editing oversight”, the projected additional material was not included in the printed edition, although the errata gives instructions on where to access it (the ritual diagrams) online. Edges of covers very lightly rubbed in places, edges of text block lightly soiled, contents clean and tight. Very good + £20

V2A. Davis, W, The Serpent and the Rainbow, 1st edition, Collins 1986, 8vo, tan cloth with gilt titles to spine, 297pp including index. The author’s first published account of his investigation into the zombi phenomenon of Haiti. Includes material on Vodou and Haitian secret societies. Ex lib, blind impressed stamp to front board, tape marks to end papers, stamps and trace of labels to front end paper, file number to verso of title page, small stamp to margin of contents page. Edges of text block soiled, front hinge strained, some very occasional light spotting or staining, mainly to margins. A good, cheap reading copy in like (edge-worn with small file number to spine panel) d/w £1.50

V8C. St Clair, D, Drum and Candle, 1st edition, Macdonald 1971, 8vo, black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 304pp, with diagrams in the text + 8pp plates. A first-hand account of Brazilian spiritualist practices, including Umbanda and Quimbanda. Edges of text block lightly browned, contents clean and tight. Very good + in very good – (lightly rubbed in places, price clipped, some light edge-wear) d/w £6

Williams, P.V.A, Primitive Religion and Healing, 1st edition, D.S Brewer 1979, 8vo, green cloth with gilt titles to spine, 12 + 212pp including index, with a double page map and a few diagrams in the text. A comprehensive overview of the folk-spells, rituals and cures that form part of the Candomble tradition of north-east Brazil, together with related appendices. Near fine in very good (some minor creasing in places) d/w £15
