V1. Bach, M, Strange Altars, 1st edition, Bobbs- Merrill 1952, 8vo, green papered boards with gilt lettering and cross symbol to spine and front board, 254pp, with a frontispiece. A first-hand account of the author’s experiences of Voodoo in Haiti. Ex lib, file number to spine, faint trace of book plate removal to front paste-down, blind impressed stamp to title page, ink stamps to top and bottom edges of text block. Joints and edges of boards very rubbed, spine worn and chipped at ends, half a dozen pages slightly spotted, text otherwise clean and tight. A Good cheap reading copy £3.50

V2A. Davis, W, The Serpent and the Rainbow, 1st edition, Collins 1986, 8vo, tan cloth with gilt titles to spine, 297pp including index. The author’s first published account of his investigation into the zombi phenomenon of Haiti. Includes material on Vodou and Haitian secret societies. Ex lib, blind impressed stamp to front board, tape marks to end papers, stamps and trace of labels to front end paper, file number to verso of title page, small stamp to margin of contents page. Edges of text block soiled, front hinge strained, some very occasional light spotting or staining, mainly to margins. A good, cheap reading copy in like (edge-worn with small file number to spine panel) d/w £1.50

Hurston, Z, Voodoo Gods, 1938, 1st U.K edition, J.M Dent 1939, 8vo, contemporary green cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt device to front board,  10 + 290pp including index, with 2 maps included in the pagination  + 24 plates. One of the first reliable first-hand accounts of both Jamaican native magic and Haitian voodoo, including that of Haitian secret societies. A few minor marks to cloth, minor soiling to top edge of text block, ownership signature to half title otherwise internally clean and tight. A very good copy of the uncommon first U.K issue in an unusual binding variant, possibly for an American retailer £40

V8AA. Seabrook, W.B, The Magic Island, 1929, 1st edition, 3rd printing, Harrap 1931, 8vo, pictorial black cloth, 320pp +  a frontispiece and 18 full page drawings by Alexander King, and 16pp plates of photographs taken by the author. A popular, but interesting first-hand account of vodou in Haiti; the notes appended to the main text include a manual of magic from the 1920s that show both European and African influences. A couple of minor marks to cloth, edges of text block a little soiled, light foxing to prelims and a few margins, text clean and tight. A near very good copy £20

A comprehensive overview of the folk-spells, rituals and cures that form part of the Candomble tradition of north-east Brazil, together with related appendices. Near fine in very good (some minor creasing in places) d/w £15
