Drummond, W, The Oedipus Judaicus, 1811, new edition (first thus), Reeves & Turner 1866, 8vo, rebound in modern plain navy blue cloth with paper spine label, new end papers, edges uncut, 4 + 46 + 266pp, with illustrations in the text + 16 engraved plates. A series of dissertations on Genesis and the books of Judges and Joshua that attempt to show them as astronomical allegories with their origins amongst the ancient Egyptians and other pagan traditions of the Near East, together with a preliminary notice on ancient astronomy.  Pencil notes to rear end paper, tiny chips to a couple of blank margins, text lightly but evenly age toned, some occasional minor spotting, mainly to margins, light foxing to top of a few leaves, text overall very clean and tight. The first public edition, of which only 250 copies were printed, textually reset in fewer pages and with some additional material; the original having been privately issued, and consisting of only 50 copies. A good + copy overall of a scarce book, the original edition being rare and seldom seen £85
