Rankine, Practical Angel Magic of Dr John Dee’s Enochian Tables, 2007, 1st edition, 2nd printing, Golden Hoard 2010, crown 4to, black cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board, 294pp, with diagrams in the text, some coloured; Hermetic Sourceworks series volume one, being a sound practical guide to Dee’s angel magic, very near fine in near fine d/w £25

M44I. (DeFoe, D), The Political History of the Devil, as well Ancient and Modern, etc, 1st edition, T. Warner 1726, Cr8vo, contemporary unlettered full dark brown panelled calf with raised bands to spine, 6 + 408pp + an engraved frontispiece. DeFoe’s history in two parts charts the rise of the Devil from earliest times through to what was then, the present day. Often darkly humorous in tone, the later part is particularly laden with satire, but also includes considerable insight into the Devil’s connection with magic and witchcraft. Binding rubbed, scuffed and marked in places, corners and spine ends very worn, front board present but detached, rear joint cracked but still holding fairly firm, lacks front and rear end papers, paste-downs grubby and with various old ink numbers and such, frontispiece cropped at top with small but largely inconsequential loss to image and pasted to inside of front board, top half inch of title page cropped not affecting text, ownership signatures to title page and top of dedication leaf, edges of text block soiled, ink blotting to margins of first few leaves, some occasional spotting or soiling throughout, mainly to margins except for the final page which is very grubby, title page edge-worn and slightly pulled at top, text otherwise tightly bound and still reasonably clean overall for its age, a just about fair, and textually slightly better copy of the rare true first issue £325

Degraaff, R.M, The Book of the Toad, 1st edition, Park Street Press 4to pbk. 1991, 16 + 208pp including index, with illustrations in the text, some in colour; an interesting guide to the natural and magical history of toad-human relations. Closed tear to upper part of back-strip without loss, slight bumping to corners, minor spots to half title otherwise internally clean and tight, good + overall £2.50

M046. Desjardins, M.R, Sin in Valentinianism, 1st edition, Scholars Press 8vo pbk. 1990, reprinted, 10 + 157pp, Society of Biblical Dissertations series number 108, being a detailed study of the concept of sin amongst this early Gnostic sect; very near fine £8

DiGregorio, S, Grimoire of Santa Muerte, 1st edition, Winter Tempest Books 8vo pbk. 2013, 6 + 117pp, with a few illustrations in the text; spells and rituals for working with Mexico’s most popular modern saint; laminate layer creased on lower corner of rear cover, covers curling out slightly and with some minimal rubbing to edges, internally clean and tight, still very good overall £6

Doresse, J, The Secret Books of the Egyptian Gnostics, 1958, 1st English edition, Hollis & Carter 1960, 8vo, red cloth with gilt titles to spine, top edge stained red, 18 + 445pp including index, with one text illustration + a frontispiece and 8 plates; an excellent study of Gnostic thought as revealed through the Chenoboskion manuscripts, including the first English translation and critical evaluation of the Gospel of Thomas. Edges of text block spotted, trivial spots to the odd margin otherwise internally and externally clean and tight, a very good copy in near very good (A few crease marks, light soiling to rear panel, light chipping to ends of spine panel) d/w £20

M46C.  Douglas, Prof. R.K, Confucianism and Taouism, 1st edition, S.P.C.K 1879, Pott 8vo, full tan pictorial cloth gilt, 287pp, with a folding coloured map as frontispiece + 4pp advertisements; covers a little soiled, spine darkened  and lightly worn at ends, corners bumped and lightly worn, front inner hinge just starting to split at gutter but remains firm, edges of text block age-toned, minor spots to verso of end papers otherwise internally clean and tight; overall a good + and textually better copy of the uncommon first issue of this volume in the publisher’s Non-Christian Religions series £15.

Drummond, W, Oedipus Judaicus, 1811, Bracken 8vo pbk. 1996, 72 + 381pp + 16 plates (on ordinary paper).  A series of dissertations on Genesis and the books of Judges and Joshua that attempt to show them as astronomical allegories, together with a preliminary notice on ancient astronomy.  Edges of covers lightly rubbed, crease to lower corner of rear cover, slightly affecting corners of last few leaves, text lightly tanned, otherwise clean and tight. Good + £2.50

Lionel Snell), What I did in my Holidays, 1st edition, Mandrake & the Mouse that Spins 8vo pbk. 1998, 2 + 410pp; this, the third volume in this series of the author’s collected works features “Essays on black magic, Satanism, devil worship and other niceties”, all in his trademark darkly humorous, highly informative and very readable style; very slight rubbing to corners and spine at head, internally and externally clean and tight, a near fine copy £12
