Simpson, W, The Jonah Legend: a Suggestion of Interpretation, 1st edition, Grant Richards 1899, 8vo, contemporary maroon cloth with blind impressed borders to boards and gilt titles to spine, 4 + 182pp including index, with a pictorial title, a few illustrations in the text , a frontispiece and 5 further plates. An interpretation of the Biblical legend of Jonah and the Whale based on comparitive studies of the aquatic gods of the ancient near east and elsewhere, together with some account of their related ceremonies and initiation rites.  Cloth lightly rubbed in places, spine slightly faded. Book plate to front paste down, end papers lightly browned, faint spotting to top of one page, contents otherwise clean and tight. A near very good copy of the uncommon original issue £28

A comprehensive survey, covering both ancient and modern traditions. Covers lightly rubbed and soiled in places, spine very slightly faded. Sprague de Camp, L de and C.C, Spirits, Stars and Spells: The Profits and Perils of Magic, 1st edition, Canaveral Press 1966, 8vo, quarter maroon cloth over papered boards,  silver titles to spine, 8 + 348pp including index + a frontispiece and 36 plates (on ordinary paper). A popular history of magic and its practitioners. Near fine in very good (very lightly rubbed and soiled in places) d/w £12

(Stirling, W), The Canon: An Exposition of the Pagan Mystery Perpetuated in the Cabala as the Rule of all the Arts, 1st edition, Elkin Matthews 1897, 8vo, quarter white cloth over blue papered boards, paper spine label, edges uncut, 16 + 404pp including index, with illustrations in the text and a preface by R.B Cunningham Graham. An excellent and pioneering study of the relationship between gematria, cabbalistic thought and scared proportion that on its original publication, was far ahead of its time and often met with bemusement, but is now widely acknowledged as a classic of its kind. A couple of trivial spots to boards, spine a little soiled and faintly creased at tail, tiny inconsequential piece chipped from upper left corner of title label, end papers lightly foxed and with small piece chipped from inner margin at the foot of the front end paper, trivial spots to a couple of margins, text clean and tight. Overall, a near very good copy of the original edition which is becoming scarce, particularly in the original binding £125

A series of essays on the origins, history and practices of Kurozumi Shintoism by the editor and others. A presentation copy signed by main contributor Reverend Muneharu Kirozumi, the sixth patriarch of Kurozumi Shinto to previous owner on the half title. Edges of covers rubbed, corners of lower cover creased, a few faint crease marks to front cover, minor soiling to edges of text block, contents clean and tight. Still a good + copy overall £10

A good sound reading copy £2

The life and works of this important saint, including chapters on the influence of evil spirits, and ointment as a sacrifice. Covers a little rubbed and marked, spine faded and soiled, title label chipped at top and very rubbed with some loss of lettering, hinges lightly strained, small ownership signature to front end paper, some very occasional minor light foxing, mainly to margins, text tight and pretty clean overall. A good, approaching good + overall copy of the uncommon first issue £18
